Shri Niranjan Maharana – National Award-Winning Pattachitra Artist
Shri Niranjan Maharana (also represented in some product records as Niranjan Moharana) is a traditional Pattachitra artist from Odisha, born into a lineage of heritage painters. He began learning the craft in childhood and has dedicated his practice to preserving and presenting Odisha’s Pattachitra tradition.
National Award & Recognition
His contribution to Pattachitra has received national recognition, including the National Award for excellence in Pattachitra craft in 2004. His documented honours also include the Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1995, Odisha), Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre Award (1998) and Nagpur Mahanagar Palika Award (1994).
His work has also reached international audiences, including an exhibition in São Paulo, Brazil, and the presentation of a Krushnalila Pattachitra to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.
Pattachitra Practice
Niranjan Maharana’s work is rooted in traditional Odisha Pattachitra. His documented process includes preparing cotton fabric canvases with coats of tamarind-seed paste and working with traditional colours such as white, black, ochre, red and yellow to depict Puranic stories, mythology and devotional themes.
