Dhokra metal art is a traditional Indian metal-casting craft known for its distinctive handmade forms and the use of the lost-wax casting process. Artisans create figures, animals, musicians, deities, lamps and decorative objects through a multi-stage process in which a wax model is used to form a mould for metal casting.
How Is Dhokra Made?
Traditional Dhokra making involves preparing a core, shaping wax around it, adding detailed forms and creating a clay mould. The mould is heated so the wax is removed, and molten metal is then poured into the cavity. After the mould is opened, the artisan cleans and finishes the cast piece by hand.
Because the mould is opened during the process and finishing is performed by hand, individual Dhokra artworks can have variations in texture, surface detail and form. These differences are part of the character of handmade metal craft.
