Baldev Waghmare – Nationally Recognised Bharewa Dhokra Artisan
Baldev Waghmare is a Bharewa (Dhokra) metal craft artisan from Tigariya Village, Betul District, Madhya Pradesh. He belongs to the traditional Bharewa artisan community and learned the craft from his father, Shri Sukhram Waghmare.
With more than 20 years of experience in Dhokra metal craftsmanship, Baldev Waghmare creates handcrafted sculptures inspired by tribal life, folk traditions, nature, mythology and everyday rural experiences. His practice combines traditional lost-wax casting with detailed handcrafted finishing.
Awards & Recognition
Baldev Waghmare has received several documented honours for his contribution to traditional Indian craftsmanship, including the National Kalidas Academy Award (2021), the State Vishwakarma Award (2011 and 2021), and the Best Artisan Award (2016) presented by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.
His work has also been associated with cultural institutions including the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (National Museum of Mankind), Bharat Bhavan, TRIFED and Adivasi Lok Kala Academy.
