Dokra art also known as Bharewa Metal Craft is a traditional metal art practiced using brass and bronze to create a wide variety of handcrafted figures and decorative objects. This art form beautifully depicts tribal life, folk culture, nature, and social traditions through intricately designed metal sculptures.
The craft primarily features tribal dance scenes, animal and bird figurines, traditional lamps, religious idols, and decorative artifacts. Many of the artworks also portray scenes from everyday community life, making Bharewa Metal Craft a narrative art form that tells stories through metal.
One of the defining characteristics of this craft is its fine detailing, traditional designs, and completely handcrafted nature. Every artwork is individually created, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.
# Complete Process
Bharewa Metal Craft is based on the traditional **Lost-Wax Casting Technique**, one of the world's oldest and most sophisticated methods of metal casting.
The manufacturing process is completed through the following stages:
1. Wax Modeling
The process begins by creating the complete figure and its intricate design using **beeswax**. Every fine detail of the artwork is carefully sculpted during this stage.
2. Clay Moulding
Several layers of specially prepared clay are carefully applied over the wax model to create a durable mould.
3. Lost-Wax Process
The clay mould is then heated, causing the wax inside to melt and drain away, leaving behind a hollow cavity that perfectly replicates the original wax design.
4. Metal Casting
Molten **brass or bronze** is poured into the hollow cavity of the mould. The molten metal fills every intricate detail, taking the exact shape of the original wax model.
5. Breaking the Mould
Once the metal has cooled and solidified, the clay mould is carefully broken to reveal the metal sculpture. Since the mould is destroyed during this process, **each artwork is unique and cannot be reproduced from the same mould.**
6. Finishing and Detailing
The sculpture is then cleaned, polished, and finished by hand. Any excess metal is removed, and the surface is refined while preserving the traditional textures and intricate handcrafted details that define Bharewa Metal Craft.
